Der Begriff geht auf die industrielle Revolution zurück, seine Definition ist aber heute umstritten. Die Angehörigen der Arbeiterklasse sind nicht automatisch gleichzusetzen mit Arbeitern im Sinne von überwiegend körperlich arbeitenden Beschäftigten.
