Mit Briefwahl wird die Gesamtheit der Möglichkeiten bezeichnet, eine Wahl per Brief statt an der Wahlurne im Wahllokal durchzuführen. Dies geschieht in den meisten Ländern vor dem eigentlichen Wahltag bzw. vor den Wahltagen. Mit echter Briefwahl wird die Wahl durch Stimmabgabe per Briefpost bezeichnet. Ein ähnliches Verfahren ist die Vorauswahl, bei der vor der eigentlichen Wahl eine Stimmabgabe im Wahllokal ermöglicht wird.
