Eine Demenz ist ein psychiatrisches Syndrom, das bei verschiedenen degenerativen und nichtdegenerativen Erkrankungen des Gehirns auftritt. Demenz umfasst Defizite in kognitiven, emotionalen und sozialen Fähigkeiten und führt zu Beeinträchtigung sozialer und beruflicher Funktionen. Vor allem ist das Kurzzeitgedächtnis, ferner das Denkvermögen, die Sprache und die Motorik, bei einigen Formen auch die Persönlichkeitsstruktur betroffen. Maßgeblich ist der Verlust bereits erworbener Denkfähigkeiten im Unterschied zur angeborenen Minderbegabung. Heute sind Ursachen einiger Demenzen geklärt, bei vielen Formen gibt es jedoch noch keine klaren, unumstrittenen Erkenntnisse zu den Ursachen. Einige wenige Formen von Demenz sind reversibel, bei einigen anderen Formen sind in begrenztem Umfang therapeutische Interventionen möglich, die allerdings lediglich eine Verzögerung des Auftretens bestimmter Symptome bewirken können. Die häufigste Form einer Demenz ist die Alzheimer-Demenz.
