Als Diskursethik bezeichnet man solche ethischen Theorien, deren zentrales Kriterium daran geknüpft ist, dass die Richtigkeit ethischer Aussagen mit Hilfe eines nach Regeln mit vernünftigen Argumenten gestalteten Diskurses gewonnen wird. Diskursethik beinhaltet eine kognitivistische Metaethik, weil die Gemeinschaft der am Diskurs Beteiligten im idealen Fall feststellen kann, was richtig ist. Die Diskursethik unterscheidet sich von einer herkömmlichen Individualethik dadurch, dass ihre Ergebnisse in einem intersubjektiven Prozess zustande kommen. Sie ist damit auch als Mittel zur Lösung von über einen Einzelnen hinausgehenden Problemstellungen geeignet, also beispielsweise in der Politik und der globalen Ökonomie.
