Als Durchgangsbahnhof bezeichnet man einen Bahnhof, der im Gegensatz zum Kopfbahnhof, den Schienenverkehr aus zwei Richtungen zulässt. Diese Bauform ist trotz ihrer teilweise problematischen Integration in die Infrastruktur der zugehörigen Stadt die praktikablere, da das entsprechende Gleisfeld mit den Weichen weniger umfangreich ausfallen kann. Zudem können die erlaubten Geschwindigkeiten vor der Einfahrt höher sein; bei einem Kopfbahnhof müssen sie aus Sicherheitsgründen deutlich reduziert werden. In einigen Fällen wurden deshalb schon vorhandene Kopfbahnhöfe zu Durchgangsbahnhöfen umgebaut.
