Da schnelle Elektronen Materiewellen einer sehr viel kĂŒrzeren WellenlĂ€nge als sichtbares Licht darstellen und das Auflösungsvermögen eines Mikroskops durch die WellenlĂ€nge begrenzt ist, kann mit einem Elektronenmikroskop eine deutlich höhere Auflösung erreicht werden als mit einem Lichtmikroskop . WĂ€hrend bei optischen Mikroskopen die Auflösung tatsĂ€chlich nahezu die von der LichtwellenlĂ€nge gesetzte physikalische Grenze erreicht, verschlechtern bei Elektronenmikroskopen die Aberrationen der elektronenoptischen Bauteile die nutzbare Auflösung um etwa eineinhalb GrĂ¶ĂŸenordnungen gegenĂŒber der ElektronenwellenlĂ€nge, die fĂŒr 100 keV Elektronenenergie etwa 0,0037 nm betrĂ€gt.
