Ein Fachwerk ist eine Konstruktion aus mehreren Stäben, die an beiden Enden miteinander praktisch gelenkig verbunden sind. Durch dieses Prinzip entstehen in den einzelnen Elementen praktisch nur Druck- und Zugkräfte. Biegemomente, bzw die daraus resultierenden Biegespannungen können sich aufgrund der, im Vergleich zur Biegesteifigkeit der Struktur, geringen Biegesteifigkeit der einzelnen Fachwerkstäbe oftmals vernachlässigt werden. Diese Biegenebenspannungen wirken sich i. d. R. negativ auf die Tragfähikeit, aber i. d. R. positiv auf die Gebrauchstauglichkeit aus.
