Die Festungshaft war eine besondere Form der Freiheitsstrafe. Festungshäftlingen billigte man eine ehrenhafte Gesinnung zu. Die Festungshaft wurde daher auch als Ehrenhaft bezeichnet. Sie war eine custodia honesta ohne Arbeitszwang. Als Freiheitsstrafe stand sie neben Zuchthaus und Gefängnis und wurde vorwiegend gegen Angehörige höherer Stände, bei politischen Straftaten oder gegen Duellanten verhängt. Die Schweiz kannte diese Strafform nie.
