Gahnit, synonym auch als Zinkspinell oder Automolit bekannt, ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der Oxide und Hydroxide. Es kristallisiert im kubischen Kristallsystem mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung ZnAl2O4 und entwickelt meist oktaedrische, würfelförmige und rhombendodekaedrische Kristalle und Zwillinge nach der Oktaederfläche, aber auch körnige Mineral-Aggregate in gelbbrauner, blaugrüner oder grünlichschwarzer bis schwarzer Farbe.
