In einer Gleisverschlingung führt man zwei Gleise so nah zusammen, bis sie sich überlagern, d. h. die "innere" Schiene jedes Gleises liegt zwischen den beiden Schienen des anderen Gleises. Diese Bauweise wird gewählt, wenn einerseits eine Engstelle keine zweigleisige Streckenführung zulässt, man aber andererseits den Einbau von Weichen zum Ein- und Ausspuren auf einen gemeinsamen eingleisigen Abschnitt vermeiden will. In einer Gleisverschlingung kann immer nur eines der beiden Gleise befahren werden. Bei signalgeführtem Betrieb muss sie durch Deckungsstellen gesichert werden.
