Die Europäische Norm 12056-1 definiert Grauwasser als fäkalienfreies, gering verschmutztes Abwasser, wie es etwa beim Duschen, Baden oder Händewaschen anfällt, aber auch aus der Waschmaschine kommt und zur Aufbereitung zu Brauch- bzw. Betriebswasser dienen kann. Das Küchenabwasser hingegen wird wegen seiner hohen Belastung mit Fetten und Speiseabfällen ausgenommen. Grauwasser lässt sich ? z. B. durch den Einsatz von Wasserrecycling-Systemen ? für eine Zweitnutzung aufbereiten. In der Regel erfolgt die Reinigung auf rein mechanisch-biologischem Weg; neuerdings kommen auch Bio-Membranfilter zum Einsatz. Das so erzeugte Klarwasser ist hygienisch sauber. Es kann für die Gartenbewässerung, den Hausputz und die Toilettenspülung eingesetzt werden; auch Wäsche lässt sich damit unbedenklich waschen . Bei einem Haushalt mit 4?5 Personen summiert sich die Einsparung auf ca. 90 m³ Wasser pro Jahr. Im Vergleich zur witterungsabhängigen Regenwassernutzung steht aufbereitetes Nutzwasser immer zur Verfügung.
