Eine Legierung ist ein metallischer Werkstoff, der aus mindestens zwei Elementen besteht, die gemeinsam das metalltypische Merkmal des kristallinen Aufbaus mit Metallbindung aufweisen. Das Verhalten der Elemente in einer Legierung und ihr Einfluss auf deren Eigenschaften sind in der Regel von drei Faktoren abhängig: Art und Anzahl der Legierungspartner, ihrem Massenanteil an der Legierung sowie der Temperatur. Diese Faktoren bestimmen die jeweilige Aufnahmefähigkeit, das heißt Löslichkeit des einen Elementes im anderen und ob die Legierungspartner Mischkristalle oder Gemische aus reinen Kristallen der jeweiligen Legierungskomponenten bilden.
