Der Begriff der Lernbehinderung existiert seit den 1960er-Jahren. Seitdem gab es einige Versuche, den Begriff zu definieren. Die eingängigste und plausibelste Definition liefert der Pädagoge Gustav Otto Kanter mit der These, dass eine Lernbehinderung ein ?langandauerndes, schwerwiegendes und umfängliches Schulleistungsversagen? bedeutet, das in der Regel mit einer Beeinträchtigung der Intelligenz einhergeht, die jedoch nicht so schwerwiegend ist, dass es sich um einen Fall von geistiger Behinderung handelt.
