Der Lipizzaner ist eine alte Pferderasse. Dieser Name taucht 1786 zum ersten Mal auf. Der Karster, wie er früher genannt wurde, hat seinen Namen vom Gestüt Lipica, der ursprünglichen Zuchtstätte in der ehemaligen Habsburgermonarchie. Berühmtheit erlangte die Rasse vor allem durch ihren Einsatz an der Spanischen Hofreitschule in Wien.
