Das Reichskammergericht war ab seiner Gründung im Jahr 1495 unter dem deutschen König und späteren Kaiser Maximilian I. bis zu seiner Auflösung 1806 neben dem Reichshofrat das oberste Gericht des Heiligen Römischen Reichs. Es hatte die Aufgabe, ein geregeltes Streitverfahren an die Stelle von Fehden, Gewalt und Krieg zu setzen. Zuerst hatte das Gericht seinen Sitz in Frankfurt am Main. Nach Zwischenstationen in Worms, Augsburg, Nürnberg, Regensburg, Speyer und Esslingen am Neckar war es ab 1527 in Speyer und nach dessen Zerstörung infolge des Pfälzischen Erbfolgekriegs von 1689 bis 1806 in Wetzlar ansässig.
