Salmiak ist ein selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der ?Halogenide? mit der chemischen Formel NH4Cl. Es besteht aus Ammonium und Chlor im Verhältnis 1 : 1 und ist damit chemisch gesehen Ammoniumchlorid. Als Salmiakgeist wird dagegen die Verbindung Ammoniumhydroxid bezeichnet.
