Eine Satellitenstadt ist eine Stadt, die im Umfeld einer größeren Stadt angesiedelt ist und in höheren zentralörtlichen Funktionen von dieser abhängig ist. Sie ist aber, im Gegensatz zur Trabantenstadt, eigenständig, vor allem, da sie eine ihren arbeitenden Einwohnern gemäße Zahl von Arbeitsplätzen besitzt und über komplette oder wesentliche Teile der Infrastruktur einer Stadt verfügt. Dazu gehören Einkaufszentren, Behörden, Schulen, Krankenhäuser, Nahverkehrsanbindung und Freizeitmöglichkeiten.
