Smithsonit, veraltet auch als Zinkspat, edler Galmei oder Edelgalmei bezeichnet und als chemische Verbindung Zinkcarbonat bekannt, ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der Carbonate. Es kristallisiert im trigonalen Kristallsystem mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung Zn und entwickelt meist rhomboedrische Kristalle, aber auch traubige, stalaktitische oder massige Aggregate in überwiegend blauer oder grüner Farbe. Auch farblose, weiße, lichtgelbe oder braune Kristalle sind bekannt.
