Die Sprossachse trägt das Blätterdach und bewegt dieses möglichst günstig zu dessen Umweltbedingungen . Sie ist ein Organ, das sich im Zuge des Landgangs der Pflanzen entwickelt hat. Es dient der Stabilisierung, der Speicherung sowie als Transportorgan für Wasser, Nährstoffe und Assimilate. Je nach Ausprägung nennt man die Sprossachse auch Schaft, Halm, Stängel oder Stamm.
