Die Symbolik entstand in analphabetischer Zeit, wo durch Pikto- oder Hierogramme auf einen Statusträger aufmerksam gemacht wurde. Ein Statussymbol ist umgekehrt ein Indikator für den gesellschaftlichen Status eines Menschen. Dabei kann es um den Status hinsichtlich gesellschaftlicher Wertvorstellungen ebenso gehen wie um die Zugehörigkeit zu einer sozialen Gruppe.
