Die Windenergie wird seit dem Altertum genutzt, um Energie aus der Umwelt für technische Zwecke verfügbar zu machen. Während sie in der Vergangenheit vor allem mit Windmühlen oder Segelschiffen genutzt wurde, ist heute die Stromerzeugung mit Windkraftanlagen die mit großem Abstand wichtigste Form der Windenergienutzung.
