In der Elektrotechnik ist der elektrische Widerstand ein Maß dafür, welche elektrische Spannung erforderlich ist, um einen bestimmten elektrischen Strom durch einen elektrischen Leiter fließen zu lassen. Verhält sich der Widerstand eines Verbrauchers in Blick auf Effektivwerte wie ein ohmscher Widerstand, verhält sich aber bei Wechselstrom anders als bei Gleichstrom, so beschreibt man den Widerstand durch zwei Komponenten, den Wirkwiderstand und den Blindwiderstand. Der Wirkwiderstand lässt keine zeitliche Verzögerung zwischen Strom und Spannung entstehen und erzeugt somit bei sinusförmigem Strom keine Phasenverschiebung zwischen Strom und Spannung. Er kann je nach Umständen von der Frequenz abhängig oder unabhängig sein; siehe dazu unter Stichwort Elektrischer Widerstand. Der Wirkwiderstand steht zugleich für den Teil des Verbrauchers, der elektrische Energie unumkehrbar in eine andere Energieform umwandelt. Im Gegensatz dazu steht der Blindwiderstand für den Teil des Verbrauchers, der Energie zwischen Erzeuger und Verbraucher pendeln lässt.
