Rot ist jener Farbreiz, der wahrgenommen wird, wenn Licht mit einer spektralen Verteilung ins Auge fällt, in der Wellenlängen oberhalb 600 nm dominieren. Während die meisten Säugetiere Probleme haben, die Farbe Rot wahrzunehmen, reagiert das menschliche Auge sehr empfindlich darauf. Entsprechend häufig findet diese Farbe Verwendung bei Warnsignalen. Rot erhielt in der Entwicklung der meisten Sprachen sehr früh ein eigenes Wort, gleich nach der sprachlichen Unterscheidung von Hell und Dunkel. Das althochdeutsche Wort rôt entwickelte sich aus dem germanischen rauða? von indogermanisch ?ereúd? und bezeichnete die Farbgebung von Kupfer, Gold und anderen Metallen.
