A magnetar is a type of neutron star believed to have an extremely powerful magnetic field .[1] The magnetic-field decay powers the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays and gamma rays.[2] The theory regarding these objects was proposed independently by two teams in 1992:[3] the duo Robert Duncan and Christopher Thompson,[4] and simultaneously by Bohdan Paczy?ski.[5] Their theory explained a burst of gamma rays that had been detected on March 5, 1979.[6][3] During the following decade, the magnetar hypothesis became widely accepted as a likely explanation for soft gamma repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars . In 2020, a fast radio burst was detected from a magnetar.[7][8][9][10][11][12][excessive citations]
