Die Bezeichnung Banause wurde von der im antiken Griechenland üblichen Bezeichnung bánausos Handwerker?, schließlich ?vulgär?) abgeleitet, mit der diejenigen abwertend benannt wurden, die nicht frei geboren waren und ihren Lebensunterhalt durch körperliche Arbeit verdienen mussten. Dazu gehörten neben den Handwerkern auch diejenigen Künstler, die die praktischen Künste ausübten. Der Zugang zu den freien Künsten blieb diesen Schichten verwehrt. In der antiken Gesellschaft waren nur diejenigen Tätigkeiten gesellschaftlich akzeptiert, die nicht von Erwerbsabsichten geprägt waren und fast ausschließlich auf geistigen Fähigkeiten beruhten.
